Alan Lederman, the founder of International Legal Recovery. We’re on the web. We have blogs. And, I’m also known as the 900-pound gorilla. Believe it or not, we have fun in the collection business, which has serious implications, but we always have a good day.
How fast do you collect? How long does it take for me to get the money that is owed to us? We say this, within 30 days you will know. But, we have also set a record. I believe the record was less than 24 hours from the time I was given the case until the client had his money. I think that’s a record. I gave a talk at the west coast office of The Jewelers, downtown Los Angeles. The talk finished up at 2:00 and there was someone there who had been in business many years and he gave me the case of a jewelry store that owed him approximately $10,000.
In those days, I was a collector. So, I called the debtor that afternoon at 4:00. I made the demand and he said, “I will send the check. I will pay that. I’m sorry I didn’t pay that. I will pay it today.” So, I knew the client very well, the check was sent to the client and in the next day’s mail, at 10:00 a.m., he had full payment. Since that time, he gave me many cases. I believe he retired from the business, I’ve been in the business 20 years, that was 20 years ago, so in less than 24 hours that client had his money.
Generally, there are some cases we collect in 1 week and there are some cases we collect in 30 days, so I say within 30 days we will know the status of the case, whether or not we’re going to collect. Of course, we have been able to send the case to one of our 67 attorneys, it might be in Alaska, it might be in Miami, Florida, and that attorney takes all of our cases on a contingency basis. It’s not like you walk into the lawyer and he says, “You know, I like your case. It’s $24,000, give me a $7,000 retainer.” And, by the time you get your bills and your hourly, you spend another $5,000, so you spend $12,000 and he gets you judgement. And he finally gives you the judgement and he says, “Oh, by the way you forgot to pay that last invoice of $1,200” so you give him a check. And you say, “How about collecting that judgment?” And he says, “I don’t do collections. I heard about this fellow by the name of Lederman, International Legal Recovery, call him up.”
I checked the case out and I find it’s uncollectable, in my opinion. The person has judgments and liens against him, so we don’t do that. We do the study of the collectability of the case before we ever send it to our attorneys. So, to collect the money that is owed you as fast as possible, we’re your partner. We want to collect yesterday, not three months from today.
